ASMBS Adds Intragastric Balloon to Approved Procedures and Devices Bariatric News

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) has added the intragastric balloon to its list of approved devices and procedures, following an extensive review and safety analysis.

Intragastric balloons were approved by the FDA in 2015 for the treatment of obesity in patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 30 and 40 kg/m2. The balloon is endoscopically inserted into the stomach and inflated with saline. Patients are advised to follow a medically supervised diet and exercise plan for six months while the device is in place and continue for six months after the device is removed to maintain weight loss.

“Intragastric balloons procedures may fill a treatment gap between medication and weight loss surgery and should be considered a standard intervention in the continuum of care for patients with obesity,” said Dr. Samer Mattar, ASMBS President. “However, insurance coverage for this procedure is currently non-existent. It is our hope that our approval and the body of evidence that supports the appropriate use the device will change that and more people will have access to a new treatment option for obesity.”

A recent survey showed that the majority of mild to moderately obese people in the US have considered weight loss surgery but are ultimately unwilling to take that first step.1 With the ReShape Balloon™, you have the opportunity to address a huge unmet need in weight loss options and help thousands of people in your community achieve life-changing weight loss without surgery.

With the ReShape Balloon Procedure, patients will receive a dual weight loss balloon that has a higher filling capacity than any single gastric balloon, one year of personalized coaching, and access to the online ReShape Balloon Patient Portal that allows your patient to track his or her food intake, weight, and exercise data.

To help you reach this new patient population, ReShape Lifesciences™ provides marketing materials and public relations tools and support to help you spread the word in your community. ReShape Lifesciences also provides tools to help your staff educate potential patients about the procedure, set expectations, and start patients on the right track to achieving their weight loss goals.
