Weight Loss: Stomach Balloon Approved As Non-Surgical Option For ‘Significant Weight Loss’
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved a stomach balloon device that obese adults can use as an option to shed off pounds without going through invasive surgery.
The ReShape Dual Balloon facilitates weight loss by giving a feeling of fullness as it occupies space in the stomach. It is recommended only for adult obese patients with a body mass index of 30 to 40 kg/m2, particularly for those with high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, according to the FDA.
The stomach balloon device is also intended for obese patients who have tried to lose weight through diet and exercise but have failed.
“For those with obesity, significant weight loss and maintenance of that weight loss often requires a combination of solutions including efforts to improve diet and exercise habits,” said William Maisel, acting director of the FDA’s Office of Device Evaluation.
