The State of Obesity 2017

A report recently released by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation titled State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America found that one-third of American adults and one in six children are now obese. The report also concluded that while adult obesity rates are showing signs of leveling off, progress could decline if public programs are cut and policies are weakened.

For the first time in 14 years of conducting this annual report, obesity rates in some states dropped, and rates of increases in other states have begun to slow. While obesity rates increased between 2015 and 2016 in Colorado, Minnesota, Washington, and West Virginia, they fell in Kansas and remained stable in all other states. Colorado reported the lowest rate of obesity, at 22.3 percent.

The report urges policymakers to invest in prevention at the federal, state, and local levels, prioritize early childhood policies and programs, and maintain progress on school-based policies and programs. The report also recommends investing in community-based policies and programs, fully implementing menu labeling and updating Nutritional Facts labels, and expanding healthcare coverage and care to help accelerate the progress in addressing obesity.

The ReShape® weight loss program offers an option that can attract the mild to moderately obese population in your community. In the US, there are approximately 83 million people with a BMI between 30-40, and more than half qualify for the ReShape weight loss balloon procedure.* This patient population is significantly higher in number than the morbidly obese population that has been the primary base for weight loss surgery.

With ReShape, patients receive a non-surgical gastric balloon that has a higher filling capacity than any single intragastric balloon, plus 12 months of support from a medically supervised team, personalized coaching, and education. Patients will also have access to the exclusive ReShape Patient Portal to track their weight, activity, and data, as well as yearlong support and accountability that will help them achieve a healthy weight.

To support your aftercare program, ReShape has developed a comprehensive set of tools and resources to optimize patient weight loss goals, adopt healthy, long-term weight management behaviors, and achieve success. After all, successful patients spreading the word about their great experience can drive a steady stream of new patients.
