Worldwide Burden of Cancer Attributable to Diabetes and High Body-Mass Index: A Comparative Risk Assessment

According to the first study to quantify the proportion of cancers attributable to diabetes and high BMI published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, diabetes and high BMI over 25 kg/m2 were the cause of 5.6 percent of new cancer cases worldwide.

Estimates suggest that 422 million adults have diabetes and 2.01 billion adults are overweight or obese, globally. Both high BMI and diabetes are risk factors for various types of cancer, potentially due to adverse biological changes caused by diabetes and high BMI, such as high insulin, high sugar levels, chronic inflammation, and dysregulated sex hormones. As diabetes and obesity become more and more widespread, the proportion of attributable cancers is set to grow even further.

“As the prevalence of these cancer risk factors increase, clinical and public health efforts should focus on identifying preventive and screening measures for populations and for individual patients. It is important that effective food policies are implemented to tackle the rising prevalence of diabetes, high BMI, and the diseases related to these risk factors,” says lead author Dr. Jonathan Pearson-Stuttard of Imperial College in London.

At ReShape®, we understand how difficult it may be for some of your patients to make lifestyle changes that can dramatically lower their chances of developing various diseases linked to obesity, such as diabetes and cancer. This is why we are committed to providing you the best possible technology and tools to help your patients achieve their weight loss goals.

The ReShape weight loss program provides the tools for you and your staff to explain the procedure, set expectations, and start patients on the right track. The ReShape Procedure offers patients a weight loss balloon – a non-surgical, intragastric balloon that requires no surgery, leaves no scars, and is inserted in about 20 minutes. Along with the ReShape dual gastric balloon, patients will receive 12 months of medically supervised support, monthly one-on-one visits with a personalized coach, education to help with mindful dieting habits and meal planning, plus use of the ReShape online portal and app for tracking weight loss, physical activity, and food intake.

Patients have lost up to 81 pounds* in six months with ReShape, maintained their newfound healthy lifestyles and weight loss results. Research shows that with just a 10 percent loss of weight, patients can experience noticeable changes in their blood pressure and blood sugar control, which helps lower risks for Type 2 diabetes.1 To learn more about how you can help patients with a BMI of 30 to 40 achieve life-changing weight loss without surgery, visit or click here for more information on ReShape and how it can help your practice grow.
