Dr. David J. Peters of PA GI Consultants explains how ReShape® is the first-of-its-kind non-surgical dual balloon weight loss procedure that’s FDA approved for people with mild to moderate obesity, who have struggled with losing weight through diet and exercise alone, and do not want or qualify for bariatric surgery.
Unlike typical bariatric surgery, ReShape is a non-invasive procedure that incorporates a intragastric dual balloon and comprehensive fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching that works to help patients achieve their goals. “It’s a very safe procedure,” says Dr. Peters. “And we don’t send [patients] to the operating room. They come to me as a gastroenterologist and endoscopist and I, without incisions or any sort of surgery, get them to sleep so they’re nice and comfortable, and pass the balloons down the mouth, into the stomach, where we can deploy the balloons where they’ll stay for six months to help people lose weight.”
The gastric balloons are a weight loss jump start, and they’re just the beginning. As Dr. Peter’s explains, the balloons remain in a patient’s stomach for six months and while the balloons are inside the stomach, the patient meets with a coach who provides personalized nutrition, fitness, and behavior guidance. With the help of a ReShape coach, a patient can focus on adopting healthy eating, exercise and lifestyle habits that will maximize their weight loss goals.
The FDA has approved ReShape for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 to 40, within the age range of 25 to 65. “It’s for a lot of different patient populations with different ages, because weight is a problem for all of us, for all ages, so we’re trying to include all adults, and trying to help them relearn to eat better but not restrictively – to learn to eat better foods and make better choices,” says Peters.
Recent ReShape data shows that with the help of the ReShape intragastric balloon and coaching from weight loss experts, patients are losing up to 81 pounds in just six months, with many patients keeping the weight off even after the intragastric balloons are removed.
